Getting to Know Me

IMG_0384_edited.jpg

As children, my sister and I played “church” in the living room of the apartment where we lived. The winters in southern Manitoba can be very cold, thus we had few other options except to stay inside and create our own world! My sister played our old upright piano very well, while I “preached” …not so very well! A man in our little Baptist church even built us a child sized pulpit that we used regularly. Little did we know where this child’s play would lead. We both spent our lives in church life.

Later, my wife Shirley and I spent our married lives working in both the local church and the academy. Over the decades, God has provided us with incredibly diverse ministry experiences. These include pastoring in local congregations, teaching and mentoring  in undergraduate and graduate schools and then serving as chaplain in a federal prison and more recently in a seniors’ community.

Such ministry is neither child’s play nor for the faint of heart ... but definitely oh, so rewarding! Long gone are the days when I lined up the stuffed animals on the couch.

This website offers insights that I have gleaned over decades of full-time ministry. As a lifelong learner who has discerned some truths of ministry but still have so much to yet master, I am grateful for the many people who formed me, starting with the man who built the little pulpit when I was in grade school.
